I occasionally walk in Nonsuch Park, and the adjoining, Cheam Park. Nonsuch was once the site of Henry VIII’s Royal Palace, which was built on the medieval settlement of Cuddington (demolished in 1538 to make way for it). Originally intended as a hunting lodge, plans changed and it grew to become a grand palace with ornamental gardens. Sadly, nothing remains of the palace today but I think Nonsuch Park itself still has a sense of the royal parkland that it once was. Cheam Park, however, has a much different feel, with more of a village-park character — manicured lawns, children’s amusements and a bowling club — also, some fine specimen trees that I often take a detour to see. On this particular morning my detour was rewarded by the stunning colour of these two trees and the rich, bronze carpet of leaves that lay beneath them.
