While photographing a temperature inversion at Box Hill I noticed an optical illusion: the thin, streaky mist made the hillside look like the placid surface of a lake, reflecting the trees along its edge. In reality the “reflection” was simply a gap in the mist that revealed the trees lower down the slope.
